Politics and Global Warming

I'd like to introduce myself and to explain the name of this blog, The Green Buck Stops Here. I'd also like to explain my thoughts on the effects of politics on Global Warming and the environment we all must live in.

My name is Mimi, or Carol, depending on to whom I'm speaking and whichever you prefer. I'm not an expert or a scientist but I've had an interest in environmental issues since the early 1970's. I've picked up a lot of information through college courses, reading and by being an observer of life and the environment. I've also been an observer of the politics of Global Warming.

Politics has always been and probably always will be a power grab. Some politicians are more well-meaning than others but it all comes down to control. One of the most effective tools in politics is FEAR. If there's nothing out there for people to fear that will promote their cause, then they create it. Once fear has been established then they convince the people that they are the only ones who can protect them. Fear leads to hate, anger, guilt and confusion. Keep the arguments going and those who shout the loudest wins. The problem is, only rarely does anything real get accomplished.

There are politicians on both sides of the isle (and in-between) who would rather not use this awesome and terrible tool but they know it's part of the game and without it they would be drowned out. Only rarely does one come along with the self-confidence and tenacity to win with more peaceful means. So, it's up to us.

My title, The Green Buck Stops Here refers back to the famous sign on Harry Truman's desk, "The Buck Stops Here." His meaning and mine is that it is time we stop "passing the buck" and take personal responsibility for what we want and need to change. It's time to stop blaming and start doing.

Saving money is also a concern of mine. Most of us can't afford to put big bucks into redesigning our homes so this blog will be dedicated mostly to inexpensive and sometimes free ways to go green. Even if you still don't believe in Global Warming, you would probably like to save money. There are many ways to save money by going green without sacrifice.

I'll try my best to keep my political views out of this and I ask you to do the same. Please be kind to each other and lets make this a constructive exchange of ideas and not a political battleground.
